Lois Koon Cockrell

Lois Koon Cockrell, 86, of Gilbert, passed away at her daughter and son-law’s home on Sunday, November 13, 2016. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 16, at Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church Cemetery with Rev. Mark Bredholt officiating. Active pallbearers will be Chris Cockrell, Jamie Cockrell, Dickie Oswalt ,Dalton Oswalt, Ted Lawson, Rudolph Kirkland, and David Bedenbaugh.

Mrs. Cockrell was born on August 14, 1930 in Leesville, SC, daughter of the late George H. and Agnes Shealy Koon. She was married to the late Wilken Cockrell, Jr. for 67 years. Mrs. Cockrell was a charter member of the Ladies Aux VFW 6740 and was an accomplished seamstress. She was a member of Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church. She was a volunteer at the Adult Literacy in Batesburg-Leesville and volunteered at Lexington Medical Center Extended Care and the Veterans Hospital. Mrs. Cockrell retired from J.B. Martin Company and worked at Walmart in Lexington, SC after retirement. However, her most important job (along with “Juner”) was to care for her great grandchild, Dalton at Mawmaw’s Daycare.

Surviving are her children, Jerry Cockrell, Karen C. Lawson, Larry G. (Sandra) Cockrell, Cynthia C. (Carroll "Tommy", her only son-in-law) Thompson; grandchildren, Autumn (Merriwan) Cockrell, Charlene (Dickie) Oswalt, Chris (Stephanie) Cockrell, Jamie Cockrell, Stephanie Scoggins, Stacy (Paul) Lathrop; great grandchildren, Dalton Will Oswalt, Alex, Chase, Blake, Jessi, Corey, Marshall, Marilyn, Ashley, Michael, Jada, Damian, and Kade. She was preceded in death by her brother, John David Koon and sisters, Addie Rae Jumper; Marguree Bedenbaugh; Georgia Matthews Adams; and Carrie Ruth Shealy.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. Tuesday, November 15, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. The family would like to give a special thanks to Tara Harrington for her friendship, love and care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt.
