Peter Adkin Matthews

Mr. Peter Adkin Matthews, 89, of Batesburg, SC went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. He was a native of Saluda county and was a member of Sardis Baptist Church where he served as deacon on numerous occasions.

He began his career working in the sawmill until it closed in 1971. He then retired from Stone Container at the age of 62 to care for his wife.

He is survived by his wife Mary Steele Matthews; his children, Judy (Rocky) Price, Truett (Patricia) Matthews and Lora Matthews; grandchildren, Bradley (Lynn) Smith, Chris (Joy) Smith, Kevin Smith, Kimberly Matthews, Hope (Glenn) Wheeler, Nick (Cindy) Matthews, Melanie Tuttle, 21 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Benjamin Franklin and Maggie Corley Matthews, two brothers William Fuller Matthews, Benjamin Truett Matthews and one sister Mattie Sue Matthews; one granddaughter Crystal Lea Hallman.

The family will be at the home of Truett and Patricia Matthews. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Milton Shealy Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00. Services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 2, 2018 at Sardis Baptist Church, 204 Sardis Road, Saluda, SC 29138 with interment at Billy Matthews Cemetery. Rev. Bell and Rev. Campbell will officiate.
