Alvin Malom Butler

Saluda

Alvin Malom Butler, 84, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Self Regional Healthcare.


He was born in Saluda County on August 11, 1941 to Alvin L. and Edna Crouch Butler. He attended Saluda High School, Class of 1959, where he was on the baseball team. After high school, Al joined the US Navy in July 1959, and served at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, VA as a structural mechanic E4 on the USS Valley Forge CVS 45. He was honorably discharged in July 1962.


After the service, he took a job with National Airlines in November 1962 at Washington National Airport at the ticket counter. He retired from Pan American Airlines in Miami, FL after serving the airlines for 27 years as a cargo supervisor. He worked in Charleston, SC for six years with Berry’s Air Freight as a cargo manager, ticket and customer service.


After moving back to Saluda, Al became active with American Legion Post 65. He served as Post Commander for 10 years and was also vice commander, historian and sergeant at arms. During his tenure, the Post won the scrapbook award. He was involved with the American Legion Post in Houston, TX for 43 years before transferring his membership to Saluda and was a lifetime member. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He loved to fish and watch Saluda High football and college football games.


Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 20 years, Jean Morgan Butler. He is survived by cousins.


Thank you to Dr. Ralph Riley and Caroline Bush, NP, staff, nurses, CNA’s, aides and physical therapists at Saluda Nursing Center for the care they provided.


A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at Travis Park Cemetery with the Reverend John Hood officiating.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Legion Post 65, PO Box 98, Saluda SC 29138 or to the Saluda County Historical Society, PO Box 22, Saluda SC 29138.
