Annie Mae Baucom

January 8, 1928 — October 22, 2008

A little before midnight, on Wednesday, October 22, Annie died. She had, she told me, outlived all of her family, all of her friends. She was an intensely private person; fiercely independent. So I don't know too much about her, except the following bits and pieces: She was graceful and proud. A model at sometime in her life, with gorgeous, long red hair. She was greatly respected by those she had worked with professionally. She was a gentlewoman, a lady. I know, too, that Annie was an avid gardener. She loved yellow roses in particular. She treasured great literature and good music and believed in angels. She liked dogs. She left behind her dirt-stained, worn, work shoes on the back steps toward the garden, and seed packets in a bowl on the kitchen table. And she left at least one friend and two dogs to remember her. Goodbye, Annie: with soft goodnight sighs, from Marti, Sophie, and Teddy. Private funeral services are under the direction of George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 PArk Ave. SW.
