Betty Jean McCullough, 88, affectionally know as "Granny" of Batesburg, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. Born in Greenwood, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Colie Hughes and Lucille Hollingsworth Maroney. She was the beloved wife of the late Vernon E. “Freck” McCullough and a member of Beulah Baptist Church. Betty enjoyed yard sales, cooking, and spending time socializing with family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister-in-law who dearly adored her grandchildren and their children.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan Kay Puckett (Frank); sons, Terry McCullough and Danny McCullough (Sonya); grandchildren, Joel Puckett, Jason McCullough, Chris McCullough (April), Jared McCullough, Jessica Cecil (Charles), Stephanie Stone, Josh Brock (Jennifer), Lee McCullough, Jodi Eyer, Kristen McCullough, Will Surber, and Ben Surber; along with 16 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sallie Hughes. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Surber; sons, Wayne and Keith McCullough; and siblings, Dot Kneece, Cleo Burgess, Raymond Hughes, Faye Hall, and Carolyn Smith.
The funeral service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held at 2:00 o'clock on Sunday, March 15th, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, Batesburg-Leesville Chapel, with burial to follow in Batesburg Cemetery. The Rev. Wesley Mayfield will officiate. Friends and family are invited for a visitation from 1 until 2 o'clock prior the service beginning.
