It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Clarence Michael "Mickey" Cato, 79, of Monetta, on Thursday, July 16, 2026. Born on November 17, 1946, in Ridge Spring, South Carolina, Mickey lived a life defined by service, faith, and a deep love for his family and community. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Following his military service, Mickey continued his lifelong commitment to serving others as a founding member of the Monetta Community Volunteer Fire Department. He devoted countless hours to protecting his neighbors and helping build an organization that continues to faithfully serve the community today.
Above all, Mickey was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His family was the center of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them, especially the many gatherings shared with his cousins and extended family. He will be remembered for his quick sense of humor, his talent for woodworking, his willingness to lend a helping hand, and the kindness that touched so many lives.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 56 years, Loretta Risinger Cato; children, Clarence Michael Cato, Jr. (Karen) and Christy Cato Shuler (Nathan); grandchildren, Emily Shuler, Alissa Cato, Joshua Cato, and Evan Shuler; sister, Phyllis Cockrell; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. In addition to his parents, Eula Whetstone Cato and Carson Whitfield Cato, Sr., Mickey was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Bertha Cato; brother, Carson Whitfield Cato, Jr.; sister, Ida Lee Cato; and granddaughter, Natalie Shuler.
The funeral service to honor Mickey's life will be held at 3 o'clock on Sunday, July 19th, at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Senterfeit officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, beginning at 2 o'clock. A private family burial will follow the service. Milton Shealy Funeral Home, Batesburg-Leesville Chapel is serving the Cato family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Bethel Baptist Church, 113 Bethel Road, Monetta, SC, 29105 or Monetta Community Volunteer Fire Department, 15 Walden St, Monetta, SC 29105.
