Aiken

Ellen K. Heim, age 81, passed away peacefully at her home in Aiken, South Carolina, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, with family and loved ones. Born on June 15, 1945, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Ellen lived a life defined by compassion, service, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family. She dedicated her professional career to caring for others as a Registered Nurse and later as a Health Insurance Case Manager, always serving as an advocate for those in need.

Ellen was the beloved wife of George R. Heim, who preceded her in death in April 2025. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, perseverance, and dedication to family. Their marriage created a home where family always came first and where everyone knew they belonged. As a mother, Ellen devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising her sons with unconditional love, steadfast guidance, and endless encouragement. She was immensely proud of them and took extraordinary joy in the men they became, their accomplishments, their character, and their happiness throughout their lives. To those who knew her best, Ellen was the foundation that kept the family together. She was the steady voice on the phone, the welcoming presence at family gatherings, and the person who never forgot a birthday, milestone, or opportunity to offer encouragement. Her love was constant, her support unwavering, and her door and heart were always open.

Those fortunate enough to know Ellen will remember her warm spirit, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor. She had a unique ability to bring laughter to difficult moments and make people feel at ease with a simple smile or well-timed remark. Though humble by nature, she possessed a quiet strength that guided her family through both joyful celebrations and life’s greatest challenges. Her commitment to caring for others extended far beyond her profession. Ellen devoted herself to service within both her community and her faith. As a member of the Aiken Mid-Day Lions Club from 2011 through 2020, she dedicated countless hours to helping those less fortunate and was recognized for her exceptional compassion with the distinction of having a “Lion’s Heart” for service. She was equally devoted to her Roman Catholic faith community, serving as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and volunteer wherever help was needed. For Ellen, faith was not merely something she believed - it was something she lived through acts of kindness, generosity, and service.

Ellen found joy in traveling, exploring new places, sharing good wine with family and friends, and spending time with an enjoyable book. She appreciated life's simple pleasures and treasured the moments that brought loved ones together. An avid fan of the tv game show “Jeopardy!” she rarely missed an opportunity to test her knowledge alongside the contestants and delighted in a competitive game of Scrabble with family and friends. A lifelong dog lover, she shared a special bond with her beloved companions Tony, Baron, Duke, Hans, and Fritz, each of whom held a cherished place in her heart and brought her years of companionship, comfort, and happiness.

Ellen’s life was shaped by deep love and great loss. She was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Heim, in April 2025; her parents, Vincent Klapperstuck and Margaret McEneaney Klapperstuck; her beloved son, Michael John Heim; and her brother, Vincent Klapperstuck. Through every hardship, Ellen showed remarkable resilience, grace, and faith. Even in sorrow, she continued to care for others and remained a source of strength to those around her.

Ellen is survived by her loving sons, Chip (George V.) Heim and Daniel G. Heim; Chip's domestic partner, Amanda Williford; her nieces and god-daughters, Kris Ann Grove (Klapperstuck), Karen Klapperstuck, and Ann Marie Linden; her god-daughters, Amy Albe, Susie Kattermann Levine, and Breanna Kandravy; and her beloved grand-pup, Carter .

The measure of a life is found not only in accomplishments, but in the lives touched along the way. By that measure, Ellen lived an extraordinary life. Her legacy is one of kindness, faith, compassion, service, humor, and unconditional love. She leaves behind family, friends, neighbors, fellow Lions, and members of her faith community who are better for having known her and who will carry her memory forward with gratitude and love. Though we will miss her voice, her guidance, and her presence, we take comfort in the love she shared, the example she set, and the countless lives she touched. Throughout her life, Ellen found joy not in being served, but in serving others, with a caring heart, a helping hand, and a steadfast faith. She will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
