George Thomas Benckert

George Thomas Benckert, 77, of Ridge Spring, entered into rest on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Born in Alexandria, Virginia, he was a son of the late Raymond Charles and Addie Maxine Long Benckert. George was married to the late Jane Elizabeth Benckert.

A devoted man of faith, George was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. He faithfully served as a missionary in Peru, South America, where he combined his love for ministry, discipleship, and teaching. George had a special passion for discipling others through Bethany Bible Institute and took great joy in sharing his faith and knowledge with those around him.

George was known for his adventurous spirit and wide-ranging interests. He loved dogs, enjoyed motorcycling through the mountains of Peru, and embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. Music was one of his greatest passions. He loved all music, especially playing the piano, and shared his gift as a choir director and music teacher, inspiring many along the way.

He is survived by his children, Nancy Cumbee (James, Jr.) and Andrew Benckert (Débora); and grandchildren, Abigail Elizabeth Holly Cumbee, James Claude Cumbee, III, Esmée Benckert, Noemi Benckert, and Zoé Witzkewitz. Also surviving are his brothers, Charles Benckert (Lynne) and James Benckert; and numerous extended family members. In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Jeanette Benckert.

A celebration of life service will be held at 3 o’clock on Sunday, December 14th at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior, beginning at 2 o’clock, before the service.
