Gladys Waters Matthews

Gladys Waters Matthews, 91, of Batesburg, passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2025. Born in Lexington County, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Hattie Ione Orender Waters. She was married to the late Alfred B. Matthews. She was a devoted member of Sardis Baptist Church and faithfully cared for the Cleve Matthews Cemetery. She was a talented seamstress and a master of crochet. Her joy could be found in gardening, and feeding the birds. Gladys loved her family, friends and neighbors.

Surviving are her son, Anthony “Tony” Matthews; sisters, Doris Elizabeth Whitman, Vera Mae Smith (James), and Barbara Waters; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Harold Waters.

A memorial service will be held at 3 o’clock on Friday, September 5th, at Sardis Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Bell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlton and Sue Samples, Jimmy Berry, Jody Matthews, George and Sophie Matthews, and Corey Miller.
