Monetta

Gwen G. Power, 81, of Monetta, passed away on August 29, 2025, after many years of health challenges. Born on April 12, 1944, in Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie O’Rell and Gladys Williams Grizzle. Gwen spent her childhood years in Alabama and Florida before attending Miami University, where she earned her undergraduate degree. She later moved to Columbia to pursue a master’s degree at the University of South Carolina. While there, she met her husband, Walt Power, with whom she shared a lifetime of love.

Gwen and Walt made their home in Columbia for many years, while also cherishing time at their country home in Monetta, where they eventually retired. Gwen retired from the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, where she served in many leadership roles, including Executive Director. Her career was marked by creativity, vision, and dedication to improving healthcare for South Carolinians. For her contributions, she was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor David Beasley. Gwen was deeply respected by her colleagues and peers across state agencies for her ability to build consensus and guide important initiatives.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Gwen was an accomplished watercolorist. She began painting in her forties after taking art classes at the University of South Carolina. Over the years, she became an active member of the Dutch Fork Art Association, the Trenholm Artists Guild, the Aiken Artists Guild, and the Art Association of Ridge Spring. Her artwork was exhibited and sold throughout South Carolina and across the United States.

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Walt; and her sister, Gloria Grizzle.
