Jacob Doyle "J.D." Cockrell, Jr., 70, of Batesburg, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026. Born in Lexington County, he was the son of the late Jacob Doyle Cockrell, Sr. and Shelby Jean Brunson Cockrell. J.D. was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. An avid outdoorsman, he loved deer hunting and fishing. Along with his friend, Wes, and his faithful dog, Scooter, he spent countless hours in the woods and fishing in the pond behind his home. J.D. could often be found on his motorcycle, enjoying the freedom of the open road and the lifelong friendships he found in his riding brotherhood.

Surviving are his children, Nicole Cockrell Williams and Jacob Cockrell (Ashley); grandchildren, Ryan Dakota Cockrell (Brett Ashley), Matthew Howard, Ameliagh Cockrell, Adam Howard, and Drayton Cockrell; a soon-to-be great-grandson, Weston Jacob; siblings, June Furtick (Phil) and Pat Cockrell (Tammy); niece, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family members. He also leaves behind his dear friend, Lynne Pine, along with many other cherished friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved companion, Dawn Marie Hall.

A memorial service celebrating J.D.'s life will be held at 4 o'clock on Thursday, July 16, at Beulah Baptist Church with Pastor James Young officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Milton Shealy Funeral Home, Batesburg-Leesville Chapel, is assisting the family.
