Colonel James Hampton Cushman, III (USAF Retired), 80, of Leesville, SC, passed away on November 6, 2024. He was born in Aiken County, SC, and was the son of the late James and Thelma Cushman of Monetta, SC.

Colonel Cushman graduated from Leavelle-McCampbell High School in Graniteville, SC, in 1962. He then attended the University of South Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree, and later obtained a Master of Science degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology. On December 18, 1965, Colonel Cushman married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Janice Phillips, also of Graniteville, South Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on September 14, 1966, and served his country valiantly for 26 years, achieving the rank of Colonel on January 1, 1988. His decorations included the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal with three service devices. Colonel Cushman was beloved by those who served under him.

A devoted Christian, Colonel Cushman was a member of Old Lexington Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed fishing and was a vibrant member of the Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club. He was a devoted husband, father, an outstanding papa, and friend, cherished by all who knew him. The precious memories shared with Colonel Cushman will forever be treasured by his family and friends.

Colonel Cushman is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Janice Phillips Cushman; his children, Jayme, James, Jacob, and Jordyn Cushman; and his grandson, Noah Cushman.

Funeral services for Colonel Cushman will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 9th, at Old Lexington Baptist Church, with Pastor George Koon officiating. Burial will be private. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM in the sanctuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Old Lexington Baptist Church, 800 Old Lexington Road, Leesville, SC 29070, or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
