James Lee Steinmeyer

James Lee Steinmeyer, 78, of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late Lloyd Raymond and Joan Cerutti Steinmeyer. James proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He later dedicated 38 years to Nabisco, a career he truly loved. Affectionately known as the “Cookie Man,” James took great pride in his work and enjoyed the many friendships he made throughout the years.

In his free time, James enjoyed fishing, working in his yard, and settling in to watch a good Western, especially Gunsmoke. He loved barbecue and always enjoyed gathering around the table for a meal with his family. James also had a special place in his heart for his dogs, especially his beloved Molly. Above all, he treasured his family and the time they shared together.

Surviving are his wife of 26 years, Jacqueline Waters Steinmeyer; children, Jessica Goff (Todd), Thomas Sterling, Jr. (Sierra), Caitlin Sterling, and Sonia Trimnal; grandchildren, Caroline Reeves (Benji), Reagan Goff, Isabella Sterling, Thomas Sterling, III, and soon-to-be grandson, Benjamin Lee Sterling; and great-grandson, Weston Reeves. Also surviving are his siblings, Mary Peters (Mike) and Tony Steinmeyer (Gwen); sister-in-law, Mary Steinmeyer; along with several extended nieces, nephews and family members. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Steinmeyer.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate James’ life will be held at 11 o'clock on September 15th at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Milton Shealy Funeral Home, Batesburg-Leesville Chapel, is serving the Steinmeyer family.
