Jeanette Temples Matthews Kyzer

May 16, 1933 — January 6, 2021

Jeanette Temples Matthews Kyzer passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 6. She was born on May 16, 1933. Jeanette was the only daughter of Waymon Wesley and Julia Bedenbaugh Temples.

Jeanette was predeceased by her parents, her husbands Walter Henry (Pete) Matthews and Floyd Kyzer, her son David Byron Matthews, as well as her brothers Waymon Jr., Albert, Lewis, and Verbe Temples.

Jeanette is survived by her son Wesley Lee Matthews and daughter-in-law Miriam Matthews. Jeanette was loved and adored by her three granddaughters Meredith Matthews Derrick (Robert), Mackenzie Matthews Taylor (Blair), and Megan Matthews Moore (Michael). “Nette,” as she was affectionately called, will be missed by her great-grandchildren Abigail Derrick, Katherine Derrick, Yates Taylor, Reeves Taylor, Brooke Moore, Henry Moore, and Mary Claire Moore. Jeanette is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Jeanette returned to school as an adult and proudly graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School. She retired from J.B. Martin Company. After retirement, Jeanette and her mother traveled to Hawaii and the Holy Land. Jeanette enjoyed spending time in Maggie Valley, where she had many friends. Jeanette loved her family, her church, and her community. As a teenager, Jeanette convinced her parents to donate the land to build Hulon Baptist Church. She was the last charter member of Hulon Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, WMU Director, and was a member of the choir. Jeanette devoted her life to serving her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The family would like to thank her at-home caretakers and the staff at Saluda Nursing Center for kindly caring for and loving Jeanette in her last days on this earth.

A private service of burial will be held at Hulon Baptist Church, officiated by the Reverend Robert Patterson. Pallbearers will be Robert Derrick, Michael Moore, Blair Taylor, Jody Temples, and Russell Temples. A public celebration of Jeanette’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hulon Baptist Church Building Fund.
