John Frederick Kattenburg

June 13, 1948 — November 18, 2023

John Frederick Kattenburg of Columbia, passed away on November 18, 2023, at the age of 75. He was born in New Haven, CT on June 13, 1948. John was the son of the late Dr. Paul M. Kattenburg and Mary Louise Clark Kattenburg of Columbia, SC. As a child, John traveled the world with his mother, father, and four siblings, following their diplomatic father who worked for the United States government as a foreign service officer. They lived at posts in Manila, The Philippine Islands, Frankfurt, Germany, and Guyana, South America.

As an adult, John pursued several occupations ranging from serving in the United States Army, owning a franchised business, and being a truck driver. However, his true lifelong passion was being a musician, specifically playing the drums. He was a well-known drummer in the Columbia area for 40 years. The only thing he loved more than playing the drums were long phone conversations with his family.

Surviving are John's four children, John Paul Kattenburg of Ocracoke, NC, Michael Kattenburg of New York, NY, Darlah and Jessica Kattenburg of Batesburg-Leesville, SC; as well as his six grandchildren, Elsie and Finn Kattenburg; Dylan Caughman, Calla Wood and Inman and Jonni Mae Burkett. He is also survived by his siblings, Richard "Rick" Kattenburg (Candi) of Martinez, CA, Jeanne Kattenburg Carlton (Robert) of Monument, CO, and Charles "Chuck" Kattenburg of Columbia, SC; five nephews; one niece; and his longtime friend and companion, Pam Chappell of Columbia, SC. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by the eldest of his siblings, Philip "Clark" Kattenburg (Pam) of Oakton, VA, who passed away this year.

The family plans to hold a private service for John at a later date.
