John Regis Tappe, 95, of Aiken, South Carolina, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Born on August 20, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late William Nicolas Tappe and Maria Theresa O'Donnell Tappe.
John lived a full and meaningful life centered on family, service, and kindness. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh in 1959, he originally planned to become a math teacher before being drafted into military service during the Korean War era. He later enjoyed a distinguished 44-year career as a CPA with Arthur Young, later Ernst & Young.
John shared nearly 66 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Nancy, whose anniversary together would have been November 24. After retiring in 2002, they settled in Aiken, a community they grew to love, and became a faithful parishioner of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.
Known for his quick wit, dry humor, and selfless spirit, John was a voracious reader who enjoyed feeding deer, watching birds, and decorating for Christmas. In retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at the museum, hospital gift shop, and the local train depot. He also enjoyed attending steeplechase and polo matches and often shared stories of his many adventures.
Surviving are his loving wife, Nancy Louise Tappe, of Aiken, SC; sons, Joseph Francis Tappe (Natalie) of Charleston, WV, and Mark Gerard Tappe (Brenda Kaye) of Aiken, SC, and daughter, Meghan Lynne Tappe of Provincetown, MA; grandchildren, William Howard Tappe (Celia), Madeline Mary Davenport (Michael), and Benjamin Joseph Tappe; as well as many extended family members. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tappe was preceded in death by his brothers, Ronald Tappe and William Tappe, and a sister, Lavonne Whartenby.
The service details are forthcoming and will be announced by Milton Shealy Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice in memory of Mr. Tappe.
