Marilyn Jernigan Wood, 82, of Aiken, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. Born on May 10, 1944, in Morehead City, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late William Hubert Jernigan and Mary Lou Jackson Jernigan.
Mrs. Wood dedicated more than 30 years of her life to education as a beloved teacher, making a lasting impact on countless students throughout her career. She was a graduate of East Carolina University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. Her passion for teaching was matched only by her devotion to her family and the many talents she shared with those around her.
An accomplished seamstress, Mrs. Wood especially enjoyed creating handmade clothes for Barbie dolls. She was also known for her exceptional cooking and baking, talents that earned recognition in the Aiken Standard newspaper. She generously shared her gifts and time with others, including assisting the Sertoma Club in providing opportunities for individuals to attend camp in Clemson. Whether through her volunteer work, her classroom instruction, or her kitchen table, Marilyn touched the lives of many and will be remembered for her kindness, creativity, and caring spirit. Above all else, Marilyn cherished time spent with her family. Her love, guidance, and unwavering support will remain a treasured legacy for those who knew and loved her.
Surviving are her son, William Buckner Wood; grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Wood (Aaron White), Brandon Michael Wood, and Alexander Charles Wood; sister, Nancy Wilson; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Michael Charles Wood, Sr.; her son, Michael Charles Wood, Jr.; her brother, Charlie Jernigan; and her sister, Enid Baggett.
The memorial service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Wood will be held at 3 o'clock on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, Historic Aiken Chapel, 211 Park Ave SW, with Reverend Dr. Josh Duckworth officiating.
