Batesburg

Mary Spence Kirkland, 70, of Batesburg, passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2025. Born in Batesburg, SC, she was a daughter of the late Edgar Gene and Joyce Harmon Spence. Mary was a devoted member of Samaria Baptist Church, where she began playing the organ and piano at just 12 years old. Her love for music was lifelong, especially gospel music, the Gaithers, and Elvis Presley.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures such as trips to the beach, camping adventures, and spending time with her beloved dachshund. Above all, she adored her grandchildren, who brought her endless pride and happiness.

Surviving are her loving husband of 51 years, Terry Kirkland; children, Terrel Kirkland Carson (Michael) and Tara Mayo (Ryan); and grandchildren, Makayla, Jayke, and Landon “L.D.” In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Scott.

A Celebration of Life for Mary will be held at 3 o’clock on Sunday, November 9th at Samaria Baptist Church, led by her son-in-law, Michael Carson. The family will have a private burial. Active pallbearers will be Ryan Mayo, Landon Mayo, Jayke Carson, Macky Rush, David Rush, and Wayne Kirkland.
