Paul Duncan Kirby

Pelion

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Duncan Kirby, who went home to be with the Lord on October 9, 2026, at the age of 63. While our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering and is now at peace in the presence of his Heavenly Father.

Paul was a true gentleman whose heart was as big as his personality. He was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and a friend to so many. He was the kind of man who would give anyone the shirt off his back without ever expecting anything in return. His generosity, kindness, quick wit, and outgoing personality made him unforgettable to those who knew him. He had a special way of making people feel welcome, whether they had known him for years or had just met him for the first time.

Paul was a smart, hardworking, and compassionate man who deeply loved his family and his community. He believed in lending a helping hand, showing up for others, and doing what he could to make a difference. He never hesitated to help someone in need, and his willingness to give of himself was a reflection of the beautiful heart he carried. His impact reached far beyond his own home, touching the lives of countless people throughout his community. He will be remembered not only for what he did for others, but for the kind of man he was.

Some of Paul’s greatest joys in life were the simple things that made life meaningful. He loved meeting new people, fishing, hunting, gardening, and spending time outdoors. He especially treasured time spent with his family. Family gatherings, laughter, conversations, and being surrounded by the people he loved meant more to him than anything money could buy. Those moments created memories that his family will hold close to their hearts for the rest of their lives.

Paul graduated from Chapin High School in 1981 and went on to earn the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout through the Indian Waters Council. He began his career with the Lexington County Fire Department, where his dedication and leadership earned him the rank of Captain, becoming known to many as “Captain Kirby.” Following his career in the fire service, Paul pursued his entrepreneurial spirit and established Southern Site Works, LLC. His deep love for his community and passion for keeping others informed later inspired him to establish the Lexington Ledger, where he took great pride in highlighting the people, businesses, events, and happenings throughout Lexington County. Through his many endeavors, Paul remained dedicated to serving and supporting the community he loved.

Above all, Paul loved the good Lord. His faith was an important part of his life, and as his loved ones say goodbye, they take comfort in the knowledge of being reunited with him one day in Heaven. Though his family would give anything for one more conversation, one more laugh, one more hug, or just a little more time together, they are grateful for the years, memories, and love they were blessed to share with him.

Paul was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Samuel Hampton “Chip” Kirby and Jacqueline Atkinson Kirby, and his brother, Mark Napier Kirby.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Susan Jones Kirby; his daughters, Abby Kirby and her husband, Justin; Kaitlyn Kirby; and Savannah Kirby; his sons, Shane Rawls and his wife, Rachel, and Zackary McClure; his brother, Ben Kirby and his wife, Susan Laney Kirby; his eight cherished grandchildren, Payton, Zoey, Lainey, Marcus, CJ, Andy, Eli, and Brysun; and many nieces and nephews.

Paul also leaves behind extended family members, dear friends, and countless others whose lives he touched throughout his lifetime. His kindness, generosity, humor, and love for the Lord, Jesus Christ, will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Though the pain of losing Paul is immeasurable, his family will continue to honor him by living with the same kindness, generosity, humor, and love that he shared so freely with others. His voice may be quiet, and his chair may be empty, but the love he gave and the memories he created will never fade. A man like Paul leaves behind more than memories; he leaves a legacy of love, compassion, and a life that truly mattered.

Until we meet again, may you rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord. You were loved more than words could ever express, and you will be missed more than anyone could ever imagine. Your life made a difference, your love will live on through your family, and you will forever hold a place in the hearts of all who knew you.
