Steven Carl Gratzer

Steven Carl Gratzer, 76, of Columbia passed away on Monday, May 26, 2025. Born on July 19, 1948, in Butte, Montana, he was a son of the late George and Dolly Heelstone Gratzer.

A proud U.S. Army veteran, Steve dedicated his life to service, first to his country and later to his community as a teacher and librarian. His career in education and libraries spanned over four decades, during which he inspired a love of reading in countless students and patrons. He also cherished traveling across the United States with his beloved wife, Sherry Hoffman Gratzer, especially visiting battlegrounds.

In addition to his wife, Sherry, Steve is survived by his stepsons, Jerry Deese, Clay Deese and Russell Deese; along with three grandchildren, Carson, Savannah and Jaydan. He is also survived by his siblings, Jill Gratzer of Los Angeles, CA, Karen Doran of Butte, MT and Karl Gratzer of Deer Lodge, MT; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members. In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by siblings, Ruthie Fesperman, George "Sonny" Gratzer, Violet Marquez, and Margie Sheley.

A funeral service to celebrate Steve's life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 7th at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, 115 N. Pine St., Batesburg, SC, officiated by Mrs. Beverly Taylor. A private burial will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Family and friends may visit from 10 until 11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Knight B at Veteran Village of Florence and to Patriot Hospice—especially his nurse, Megan—for the exceptional care, compassion, and support provided to Steve and his loved ones over the past two years.
