Steward W. O'Rear

A Memorial service for Mr. Steward W. O'Rear will be held on Friday, December 15, 2006 at 1pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 961 Trail Ridge Rd. Aiken, S.C. Mr. O'Rear, 87, of Aiken, died Monday, December 4, 2006 at his residence. A son of the late William T. & Linne Fahnestock O'Rear, he was born in Winchester, VA and lived in Wilmington, DE prior to moving to Aiken fifty-three years ago.

Mr. O'Rear attended the University of Virginia, where he earned a BS degree in Chemical Engineering and was a member of Tau Beta Pi, engineering honor society. A veteran of WW II, he was a graduate of the U. S. Navy Russian Language Training School at the University of Colorado and was a Lieutenant in Naval Intelligence in Washington, DC.

Mr. O'Rear worked for DuPont Central Research in Wilmington, Delaware prior to being a Chemical Engineer in charge of the Technical Information Service for DuPont at the Savannah River Site. He was a founding member and a past president of the Savannah River Chapter of the American Chemical Society, served as a volunteer with VITA preparing income tax returns, was a past council member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and a member of the Woodside Men's Golf Association. He will be remembered for establishing and maintaining a bluebird sanctuary in Woodside Plantation.

He is survived by his wife; Elizabeth K. O'Rear, Aiken, four sons; Steward W. O'Rear, Jr. and his wife, Beth, Aiken, Robert O'Rear, Lawrenceville, GA, Michael G. O'Rear and his wife Becky, Aiken, David T. O'Rear and his wife, Susan, Saluda and a brother; Milton O'Rear, Montgomery, AL. Nine grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren also survive Mr. O'Rear.
