Edgefield

Sybil C. Cockrell, 96, of Edgefield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Born in Saluda County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Artemas "O.A." and Mattie Belle Parkman Cockrell. She was the devoted wife of the late Lemar Cockrell.

Mrs. Cockrell was a faithful and dedicated member of Good Hope Baptist Church, where she joyfully served in many capacities throughout the years. She welcomed others as a church greeter, taught Sunday School, led the Benevolence Committee, participated in the Singing Christmas Tree, and helped compile the church cookbook, sharing many of her treasured recipes. She also faithfully collected aluminum cans to support mission work and donated knitted hats and church literature to the Seamen's Mission in Charleston.

Her servant's heart reached far beyond her church. Mrs. Cockrell was an active member of the Ridge Baptist Association and served on the Senior Citizens Activities Committee. She volunteered at the Saluda Nursing Center, where her compassion and dedication earned her the honor of Volunteer of the Year. She also collected canned goods for Hannah House, completed a nutrition course to better serve underprivileged families, and lovingly organized reunions for the Saluda High School Class of 1947, helping classmates stay connected through the years.

Mrs. Cockrell also enjoyed fellowship and friendship as a proud member of the Good Hope Creepers Red Hat Society. Whether serving her community, supporting missions, or lending a helping hand to those in need, she lived a life marked by generosity, kindness, and unwavering faith. Her legacy of service and love for others will be cherished by all who knew her.

Surviving are her sons, Steve Cockrell (Jo) and Neal Cockrell (Vicki); grandchildren, Scott Cockrell, Amy Hernandez (Ruben), Ryan Cockrell, Marcus Cockrell, Julia Kundert (Casey), and Lindsey White; great-grandchildren, Naomi Hernandez, Sam Hernandez, Calvin Kundert, and James Kundert; along with a sister, Joyce Dennis; and sister-in-law, Ann Cockrell. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Lindy Cockrell; and siblings, Runette Frazee (Frank), Dorothy "Dot" Stevenson (Frank), Dudley "Duck" Cockrell, Robert "Bobby" Cockrell (Carrie Belle), Hubert Cockrell, and Heyward Brooks Cockrell.

A funeral service celebrating Mrs. Cockrell's life will be held at 11 o'clock on Monday, July 6th, at Good Hope Baptist Church, with burial immediately following in the church cemetery. Rev. Lee Going will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, beginning at 10 o'clock. Active pallbearers will be: Watson Dorn, Kenny Warren, Danny Cockrell, Wayne Cockrell, Bert Cockrell, and Todd Cockrell.
